Roll through the Australian Outback in luxury on board the legendary Ghan during a one-of-a-kind adventure from Adelaide to Darwin.

Board the legendary Ghan in Adelaide for your journey north, gliding through the beguiling landscape of the Australian Outback. Often described as a ‘national treasure’, this iconic train offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience to treasure. Following the tracks of pioneering explorers through the red heart of Australia, you’ll pass through some of the continent’s most unforgiving terrain in sublime comfort, enjoying fascinating excursions along the way.

Your second day finds you reaching the remote Outback town of Marla in time to witness an enchanting desert sunrise. After enjoying brunch back on board the train, you’ll pass through the MacDonnell Ranges to the town of Alice Springs in the heart of the country. Here you’ll get to see what makes this place so special on one of several tours. From Aboriginal art in the galleries to services like the flying doctors who carry out their roles in tough conditions, it’s a town that’s bursting with character.

Before reaching Darwin in the evening, you’ll call at the tropical town of Katherine where you’ll have the option of exploring it from water or land. Cruise the deep crevices of the Nitmiluk Gorge where Indigenous rock paintings shed light on the history and culture of the local Jawoyn people – but look out for lurking crocodiles!

Your locomotive journey ends in the balmy capital of Australia’s Northern Territory, Darwin, where you’ll disembark for a three-night hotel stay. Explore this compact city both at your own leisure and through a series of tours which include the giant termite mounds and famous jumping crocodiles of Litchfield National Park.  A sunset cruise around the harbour is sure to leave a lasting impression as you marvel at the glittering waters.

Ahead of your Ghan journey, you’ll also get to know beautiful Adelaide, regarded as one of the world’s most liveable cities. Visit the Adelaide Zoo, home to over 3,000 animals, or admire the masterpieces in the renowned Art Gallery of South Australia. A short distance from the city are the charming Adelaide Hills, known for their wine, wildlife and scenery. During a full day tour, ascend Mount Lofty for panoramic views before indulging in a series of tastings, from artisan chocolate to award-winning wine. You’ll also explore the intriguing town of Hahndorf with its proud German roots that go back to the mid-19th century.
