Located on the subtropical island of Sao Miguel in the mountainous Azores, Ponta Delgada was founded in the 15th Century by Portuguese and Flemish sailors. The island is home to some spectacular scenery including volcanic lakes, emerald forests and rocky headlands. You can drive out to nearby villages and natural wonders or stay to explore Ponta Delgada with its black-and-white tiles, whitewashed buildings and excellent seafood restaurants.

The Tuscan capital is an achingly romantic city of medieval architecture and art, with a magnificent city centre that has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Regarded by many as the birthplace of the Renaissance movement, it’s home to the superb Uffizi Gallery, home to works by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. Florence

Returning to the port of Livorno, you’ll enjoy another day to venture out and explore the charms of this enchanting region. Escape to Pisa with its world-famous vertically challenged tower. Naples, with its famous bay, is southern Italy’s most historic city and is overlooked by the towering slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Messina (Sicily)

Sailing into Messina you’ll be captivated by the views, just a few kilometres from the Italian mainland. There’s plenty to see in the gateway to Sicily, from wide boulevards to elegant buildings in a state of charming disrepair. Explore the cathedral and try the swordfish – a local delicacy – or head out on a trip to the pretty towns just inland, the smouldering peak of Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, or the sleek, hilly Taormina.

Corfu is an island surrounded by golden sandy beaches, crystal waters and tropical flora. Corfu Town is a bustling, contemporary city filled with history and Greek charm. Kotor

Tucked away in the jagged mountains that crowd around the Bay of Kotor, this old port in Montenegro is awash with charming red-roofed Venetian buildings and welcoming waterfront restaurants. No visit here is complete without a visit to Our Lady of the Rocks, an artificial island in the bay which was built on top of sunken ships loaded with rocks. Although tiny, it’s home to an old church and a museum. Curiously, the old town also hosts a whimsical museum dedicated entirely to cats.
