At the remote west-coast city of Perth, board the magnificent Indian Pacific for an iconic transcontinental voyage to Sydney, following the path of bush pioneers and gold rush prospectors.  This is one of the world’s finest coast-to-coast crossings featuring the longest stretch of straight railway track in the world. Cocooned in luxury, you’ll savour all-inclusive dining in the Queen Adelaide Restaurant, relax in your private cabin with en-suite, and leave the train for several wonderful off-train excursions, ensuring this enthralling journey is one to remember.

The first of these excursions is to the former gold rush town of Kalgoorlie Boulder, once a prosperous place where a number of elaborate buildings were constructed, many of which remain standing to this day. After rolling through the barren beauty of the vast Nullarbor Plain, you’ll stop in Cook, now best known as a ghost town with just a handful of residents. You’ll then visit Adelaide, where you can take a city tour, and then the artistic community of Broken Hill, the country’s silver capital.

Before arriving in Sydney where you’ll disembark your train, you’ll stop at the scenic highlight of your journey. The majestic Blue Mountains of New South Wales are awash with lush eucalyptus forests and striking rock formations such as the Three Sisters, a series of sandstone pillars that jut out of the landscape. It’s a formidable terrain blessed with an abundance of wildlife including koalas, dingoes and endangered birds.

Ahead of your Indian Pacific experience, you’ll also spend five days getting to know Perth. Western Australia’s cosmopolitan capital is famed for being the most isolated city in world. During a captivating hotel stay you’ll explore this fabulous city both at your leisure and through a series of deluxe tours.

As part of your holiday, you’ll enjoy a 48hr Hop-On-Hop-Off bus pass. Sit back and relax as you journey around the Central Business District, learn the history of the Swan River and admire the natural beauty of Kings Park.

A further tour takes you to nearby Fremantle at the mouth of the Swan River, known for its vibrant markets and arts culture. Enjoy a scenic river cruise and delve into the history of Fremantle Prison before spending a fourth day touring beautiful Rottnest Island, home of the famous quokkas. After a day at leisure, the Indian Pacific will be ready and waiting to whisk you across the country on the rail journey of a lifetime.

Welcome aboard the Indian Pacific

Experience one of the few truly transcontinental rail journeys in the world with a voyage on board the Indian Pacific service, which travels across the breadth of southern Australia in incomparable style. Part of Great Southern Rail, the Indian Pacific speeds from coast to coast on a storied journey that follows in the footsteps of bush pioneers, gold rush greed, and famous adventurers who forged to discover the barren natural beauty of Australia’s famously unforgiving outback.

Know the Facts

The dream of a transcontinental rail service began in the 1890s, but it was not until 1969 that an uninterrupted rail track linked the Indian Ocean in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east. The train’s first full transcontinental journey took place on 23 February 1970, when more than 10,000 people welcome the historic train to the city of Perth. Today, the 774-metre-long train travels the 4,350 kilometres between Sydney and Perth in approximately 65 hours. It is instantly recognisable by its bold wedge-tailed eagle emblem.

Carriages

On average, the train comprises some 30 different carriages, including guest cabins, crew quarters, restaurant cars, lounges and power vans. The length of the train is around 774 metres, so you’ll have plenty of space to stretch your legs on board.

Cabins

The accommodation on board is extremely luxurious, with different levels of opulence depending on what you desire from your escape. The modern cabin suites are hewn from wood and have all the comforts required to ensure you have a restful journey, and contrast beautifully with the elegant Edwardian décor of the dining cars.

Food

Your dining options depend on the level of service you have opted for, but all meals take place in the beautifully appointed Queen Adelaide restaurant car or the Platinum Club. Menus change frequently and feature Australian cuisine and more international flavours, plus sumptuous local wines.
