You’ll begin your holiday with a four-night stay at magnificent Lake Maggiore. Along the shores of Italy’s second-largest lake you’ll find everything from waterfalls to ancient buildings that cling to the cliffside. On your first day, spend the day at leisure, perhaps paying a visit to the 14th-century monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso, one of the most striking sights along the lake’s shores.

The following day you’ll take an unforgettable train ride through the Centovalli, which translates as “one hundred valleys”. This famous region of Switzerland serves up a dizzying visual feast of dramatic gorges and crevices.

At Lake Como, you’ll spend a further four nights and take a scenic train ride on the Bernina Red Train. It’s a journey that’s packed with dramatic sights, with highlights including the dizzying Brusio spiral viaduct, an engineering marvel and UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll also pass through the magical Bernina Pass to reach the upmarket resort town St. Moritz.

After a day at leisure, you’ll then transfer to wonderful Lake Garda for another four-night hotel stay. The country’s largest lake lies at the foot of the Dolomites, fringed with picturesque villages and dotted with islands. You’ll have a day to sample the local wine on a tour in the bucolic hills, before ending your holiday with one night in Milan, the spiritual home of Italian fashion.

Today you will arrive in the fashion capital of Milan and transfer to Lake Maggiore for the start of your magical Italian Lakes adventures. Check into your four-star hotel and relax in your breathtaking surroundings.

Located just south of the Alps, Lake Maggiore is the second-largest lake in Italy and extends into Switzerland. It’s characterised by its colourful fishing villages, the tiny Borromean Islands off its south-western shore and the delicious cuisine found in the villages around it. Blessed with a mild climate all year round, the surrounding landscapes burst with a mesmerising array of Mediterranean vegetation and exotic plants.

Day 3

Savour a scenic rail journey on board the Centovalli Express

Today you’ll enjoy a picturesque train journey from Domodossola to Locarno. This unforgettable experience will take you through the stunning Centovalli, or “One Hundred Valleys”, as you pass by deep gorges and crevices with cascading waterfalls, as well as across alpine meadows, numerous bridges and forests of chestnut trees. Upon arriving on the Swiss shores of Lake Maggiore, you’ll enjoy some time to embrace the atmospheric surroundings and explore the treasures within.

Day 4

Delve deeper into Lake Maggiore’s remarkable landscape and gorgeous towns

With another day at leisure in Lake Maggiore, you’ll get the chance to revel in the landmarks and attractions the region has to offer. Spend time wandering the gorgeous town of Stresa, a favourite of Ernest Hemingway’s and the gateway to the marvellous Borromean Islands, home to gorgeous gardens and grand, luxurious residences. A number of striking historical buildings can be found around this beautiful lake, including the 14th-century monastery of Santa Caterina del Sasso. This ancient structure clings to the foot of a sheer cliff but can be easily reached on foot. You could also visit the medieval Rocca di Angera, an imposing fortress overlooking the pretty town of Angera. Inside is the 12-room Museo della Bambola, home to a remarkable collection of priceless dolls and antique mechanical figurines.

Day 5

Transfer to captivating Lake Como and settle in for a four-night stay

Saying farewell to Lake Maggiore, today you will transfer to gorgeous Lake Como for a four-night, four-star hotel stay. Poised in the shadow of the snow-draped Rhaetian Alps and nestled between steep-wooded hills, the spectacular surroundings of Lake Como welcome you with open arms. Shaped like an upside-down Y, its meandering shoreline is dotted with ancient villages and exquisite villas. Wander aimlessly along the lake, crossing through gardens, visit the main square and explore the centre’s history or head to Brunate using the funicular and witness breathtaking views of the shore and lake below.

Also known as Lario, Lake Como is a lake of glacial origin in Lombardo and is the third-largest lake in Italy. Day 7

Experience one of Europe's most scenic rail journeys on the Bernina Red Train

A day of adventure awaits as you embark the iconic Bernina Red Train for a rail for a journey to St. Moritz, passing through the Poschiavo Valley and the Engadin. Enjoy incredible sights of majestic mountains and quaint little towns as you trundle over the Brusio spiral viaduct, in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, and onto the magical Bernina Pass. Before reaching St. Moritz, you’ll savour incredible views of Lake Bianco and its shield of the snow-capped Morteratsch Glacier.

Day 8

Bask in Lake Como’s quaint towns and picturesque villages

With another day in Lake Como you could explore more of the many quaint towns perched along the shores of the lake, or even the small city of Como itself, which is full of museums, well-manicured parks, palaces and grand churches and cathedrals dating back centuries. Another romantic spot is the picturesque village of Varenna, with its brightly painted houses set before a quintessentially alpine backdrop — a great place for photo opportunities.

Day 9

Transfer to the largest lake in Italy, Lake Garda, to begin your four-night stay

A day at leisure is yours to explore this fascinating lake. Pay a visit to magical Sirmione awash with thermal springs, an ancient fortress and Roman ruins of a villa. Nature-lovers will enjoy a day walking in the hills and taking in the breathtaking views over the lake, or perhaps take a boat out to one of the other towns on the coast to see a different side to the area. Revel in Lake Garda’s beauty during your final day in the Italian Lakes

On your final day in beautiful Lake Garda, find a quiet waterfront trattoria to relax in while the waves of the lake gently lap at the harbour walls. Or head out into the bucolic countryside where you’ll find olive groves and vineyards galore, perhaps taking a tasting tour. You could also cross to the tiny island of Isola del Garda, a privately owned speck of land in the south-west of the lake that’s open to the public and is home to a palatial Venetian neogothic villa.

The spiritual home of Italian fashion, Milan is where some of the world’s best-known designer labels are based and where shoppers can take their pick of high-end boutiques. It also serves up a feast of cultural riches, with stunning architecture like the Duomo, with its abundance of spires, pinnacles and statues. Wine Tasting

The fertile area around Lake Garda is blessed with countless vineyards that produce acclaimed wines. Take a guided tour and sample a glass of Pinot Grigio or Bardolino as you marvel at the rolling vineyards and historic wineries that surround Lake Garda. This is a relaxing half day trip without having to travel any great distance. You will get to visit a local winery where there will be an explanation about the soil and grapes, the wines and how they are made. This will be followed by a tasting of typical wines.

Bernina Red Train

This memorable journey takes you past sapphire-hued glaciers and dramatic, jagged mountains, as well as astonishing architectural wonders like the single-track Brusio spiral viaduct with its nine stone arches. Pass through the spectacular Bernina Pass, with views of Lake Bianco and the snow-clad Morteratsch Glacier before reaching the glamorous resort town St. Moritz.
