Your adventure begins in the coastal city of Cairns beside the Great Barrier Reef. After an overnight hotel stay, you’ll embark the Savannahlander train, a delightful throwback to the 1960s with its “silver-bullet- look and vintage interiors. At a gentle pace, this enchanting rail journey takes you to some of the best-loved natural attractions in the Outback of Queensland.

You’ll first stop at the Chillagoe Limestone Caves for a thrilling tour of these subterranean ancient wonders. As well as Aboriginal rock art, you’ll find several species of bat and geological curiosities, while you’ll also get a tour of the town of Chillagoe itself. After an overnight stay at the rustic and eco-friendly Chillagoe Cabins, you’ll board the train again to Forsayth. This tiny town, with a permanent population of around 75 people, is home to two heritage sites relating to its historic railway links, and once attracted those who flocked here to work in the local gold, silver and copper mines. You’ll stay at Finnegan’s Rest in the heart of the town.

Your next off-train excursion is the Undara Lava Tubes, formed 190,000 years ago by the lava flow from ancient volcanoes. Explore these cavernous tunnels with an experienced guide before retiring to your cabin at Bedrock Village, home to a saltwater pool, mini golf course and a campfire pit – a popular place to gather with other guests after sunset.

Disembarking the Savannahlander back in Cairns for a three-night hotel stay, you’ll have ample time to delve into many attractions of this coastal city. Roam the Cairns Botanical Gardens, take the scenic cable car to the nearby village of Kuranda, famous for its handicraft and souvenir shops.

You could also upgrade your holiday and enjoy a superb guided tour of the Great Barrier Reef. Explore Fitzroy Island National Park, surrounded by a beautiful fringe reef system then head for Moore Reef on an air-conditioned catamaran where you’ll spend four hours amongst the endless reefs of these sparkling sapphire waters.
