Relish a classic transcontinental journey from Perth on the Indian Pacific and a five-night, five-star hotel stay in Sydney, followed by a luxury all-inclusive Azamara cruise to Fremantle, savouring Southern Australia’s highlights.

Your unforgettable journey begins in Perth, embarking the Indian Pacific for a three-night, iconic journey across Australia. Following the path of bush pioneers and gold rush prospectors, the Indian Pacific is one of the world’s finest coast-to-coast crossings on the longest stretch of straight railway track. Savouring the luxury, all-inclusive dining and ever-changing landscapes – such as the vast Nullarbor Plain – you’ll disembark for several enthralling off-train experiences that include gold rush town, Kalgoorlie Boulder, Cook, formerly a thriving railway community now resembling a ghost town, South Australia’s capital, Adelaide and the spectacular Blue Mountains, before disembarking in dazzling harbour city, Sydney.

Then savour five nights at a luxury five-star hotel in downtown Sydney, close enough to discover many of the city’s iconic sights and landmarks – such as the striking Opera House, Harbour Bridge and The Rocks – and with ample time to explore them. A highlight is a fantastic dinner cruise, soaking-up the glittering night-time skyline on one of the world’s most magnificent harbours.

Then embark the all-inclusive Azamara Quest®, a luxury ‘boutique hotel at sea’  and mid-sized cruise ship that offers everything modern voyagers are looking for, plus unexpected extras. For the next 13 memorable nights, you’ll cruise back to Western Australia, stopping en-route at some marvellous destinations along the continent’s southern shores.

First stop is Melbourne, Victoria’s trend-setting capital, where you’ll relish the world-class dining and café culture, shopping and vibrant arts and sports scene, then historic Portland, Victoria’s first permanent European settlement boasting over two hundred 19th-century heritage buildings. You’ll be captivated with your next stop, Kangaroo Island, but a pristine wilderness off the mainland, where native Australian wildlife, such as sea lions, thrive.  Then return again to Adelaide, savouring more of the city’s abundant arts and culture and award-winning gourmet cuisine and wines.

Following two days sailing the Great Australian Bight, you’ll arrive in Esperance, discovering some of Australia’s whitest sandy beaches and clearest turquoise waters. Then off Western Australia’s southern tip, you’ll stop at Albany, home to more dazzling white beaches and fascinating colonial-era history, before Busselton, famed for its 1.8-kilometre, heritage-listed wooden jetty and gateway for scenic Margaret River, the world-famous wine producing region. Finally, after an overnight port of call in historic port city, Fremantle, you’ll disembark, thus concluding your extraordinary transcontinental adventures!

Welcome aboard the Indian Pacific

Experience one of the few truly transcontinental rail journeys in the world with a voyage on board the Indian Pacific service, which travels across the breadth of southern Australia in incomparable style. Part of Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions, the Indian Pacific speeds from coast to coast on a storied journey that follows in the footsteps of bush pioneers, gold rush greed, and famous adventurers who forged to discover the barren natural beauty of Australia’s famously unforgiving outback.

The dream of a transcontinental rail service began in the 1890s, but it was not until 1969 that an uninterrupted rail track linked the Indian Ocean in the west to the Pacific Ocean in the east. The train’s first full transcontinental journey took place on 23 February 1970, when more than 10,000 people welcome the historic train to the city of Perth. Today, the 774-metre-long train travels the 4,350 kilometres between Sydney and Perth in approximately 65 hours. It is instantly recognisable by its bold wedge-tailed eagle emblem.

Wake in your luxurious cabin to the sunrise beaming over the vast expanse of the remote Nullarbor Plain. You’ll then stop in Cook where you can wander through what was once a bustling railway community established in 1917. Today, Cook resembles a ghost town, where skeletons of farm equipment eerily lie abandoned and houses glare out, vacant and deserted, but lends a unique glimpse of pioneering Australia.
