Experience the eye-popping Cobbold Gorge, Queensland’s youngest gorge, from a glass bridge and a leisurely gorge cruise. Embark the iconic Savannahlander train, a delightful throwback to the 1960s with its silver-bullet-look and vintage interiors, to travel from Mount Surprise to Einasleigh to witness some of the best-loved natural attractions in the Outback of Queensland.

Today you’ll enjoy a day at leisure to explore Cairns. Take the cable car to nearby Kuranda or settle into a restaurant on the esplanade, home to a spacious swimming lagoon - perfect for a cooling dip. Cairns also has a number of lively night markets that are open until 11pm, selling everything from food produce to handmade souvenirs by local artisans and designers.

Soak up the colourful marine life in the Outer Great Barrier Reef on a tour to Moore Reef

Today you will travel to Moore Reef on an air-conditioned catamaran where you’ll spend four hours on the Outer Great Barrier Reef. You’ll get to enjoy complimentary inclusions such as snorkelling and glass-bottom boat viewing tours, as well as a seafood buffet lunch. There are also a variety of optional extras including Seawalker Helmet Diving.

Today, you’ll visit the highest town in Queensland, Ravenshoe, followed by a visit to the Millstream Falls, a tiered plunge waterfall within the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics. Spending the night in Undara, enjoy sparkling wine and settle in for a stay in a beautiful fully-restored vintage railway carriage, featuring award-winning accommodation. Set against an original teamsters coach road, under the shade of tall trees surrounded by Australian Native wildlife, the location is sublime.

Transfer to Georgetown with a unique Savannahlander experience from Mount Surprise to Einasleigh

Travelling from Undara to Georgetown, today you’ll witness the Undara Lava Tubes – tunnels formed by the lava flow from ancient volcanoes – during a morning Archway Tour. You’ll then visit the old mining service town in Mount Surprise before enjoying a two-hour voyage on the Savannahlander vintage train, with its classic 1960s silver carriages, from Mount Surprise to Einasleigh at a gentle pace.

Savour the stunning scenery of Cobbold Gorge

The next part of your Outback adventure will see you visit Cobbold Gorge, Queensland’s youngest gorge that’s set amongst an ancient landscape. Stop by Georgetown’s Ted Elliott Mineral Collection and the Old Forsyth Jail followed by an immersive three-hour Cobbold Gorge Tour. Appreciate this incredible narrow gorge from the glass bridge before discovering the gorge on a scenic boat cruise.

Journey from Cobbold Gorge to Atherton, via hot springs, craters and waterfalls

Your adventure continues as you travel to Atherton with a magical Talaroo Hot Springs tour. Experience the remarkable connection between the ancient site and the Ewamian people before soaking in the healing waters of the original pool before relishing a wood-fired pizzas at Pinnarendi station. Your tour continues with a visit the awe-inspiring, green-covered Mount Hypipamee Crater and savour the scenery of Surprise Creek Falls in the Barron Gorge National Park, before enjoying an overnight stay in your Atherton Motel.

Day 9

Enjoy your final day of Outback adventures before returning from Atherton to Cairns

Prepare to witness some of the region’s most eye-popping sights as you travel 170km from Atherton to Cairns. Included in today’s tour you’ll visit the Tablelands Avenue of Honour and the extraordinary Curtain Fig National Park, just outside Yungaburra on the Atherton Tablelands. The star of Curtain Fig, the endangered mabi forest and a large fig tree, with its extensive aerial roots dropping 15m to the forest floor to form a ‘curtain’. You’ll also tour the only distillery in Tropical North Queensland Mount Uncle Distillery, set against banana, avocado and macadamia trees. Finish the day voyaging through the lush rainforest with a ride on the famous Kuranda Scenic Railway to Cairns.

Undara Lava Tubes

Some 275 kilometres southwest of Cairns, the Undara Lava Tubes are cavernous tunnels formed by the lava flow from ancient volcanoes. One of Queensland’s most fascinating natural landmarks to explore, the Undara Lava Tubes are considered to be Australia’s longest lava tubes and are home to a diverse variety of wildlife, from bat species to goshawks.

Savannahlander

This authentic vintage train operates in Far North Queensland, travelling on the Tablelands line between Cairns to Forsayth. Comprising of carriages that date back to the 1960s, with the interiors being modified for your comfort and enjoyment, the Savannahlander is one of the most unique ways of experiencing the Queensland Outback. The partition between the driver and passengers has been removed, allowing you a front view of the tropical landscape as you’re whisked from Mount Surprise to Einasleigh.

Cobbold Gorge

A hidden oasis tucked away within the rugged sandstone formations of North Queensland; Cobbold Gorge lies in the heart of the Gulf Savannah region.
