Next, sail to the dramatically beautiful South Island and intriguing port town, Lyttelton, which comes jam-packed with history: where the first European settlers came ashore in 1850 and launch pad for South Pole expeditions at the turn of the last century. At Dunedin, ‘Edinburgh of the South’, you’ll sense the strong Scottish heritage, from the tartan souvenirs to a faux castle, before heading to the ethereally beautiful Fjordland National Park. In one brilliant day you’ll relish a scenic cruise through a trio of spectacular natural fjords, Milford Sound, Dusky Sound and Doubtful Sound and perhaps glimpse blue penguins.

  

After cruising across the Tasman Sea you’ll reach Australian shores and Melbourne, the cosmopolitan capital of Victoria, renowned for its flourishing arts scene, passion for sport and gourmet restaurants. Nestling on the lower slopes of a steep-sided extinct volcano, the historic port town of Lyttelton has a long, colourful history, the exact point where the first European settlers came ashore in 1850. The town’s small maritime-themed museum boasts a fascinating Antarctic gallery, as the city was also the launch pad for South Pole expeditions at the turn of the last century One of Lyttleton’s proudest features is the neo-Gothic Timeball Station, built in1876, to keep Greenwich Mean Time and signal the time to ships in the harbour. An outstanding example of Victorian technology, it’s one of only five still operating in the world today. Besides history, savour the stunning views from the Port Hills above the city and the abundant wildlife and rich Maori culture. Lyttelton is also the gateway to nearby Christchurch, which you may wish to explore on an organised tour.

On this amazing day, you’ll first cruise through the narrow fjords of Milford Sound, where even your massive cruise ship seems to shrink in comparison to the towering cliffs topped by lush mountain terrain. Situated within Fiordland National Park, this natural wonder is part of Te Wahipounamu World Heritage Site and is a haven for diverse wildlife. Dusky Sound awaits next, the largest and most complex of New Zealand’s many coastal fiords, where steep cliffs have been hewn over the centuries by countless waterfalls. Here too, is a wildlife paradise, with seals and dolphins patrolling the water.
